Grand Raid 2012 – An exceptional Race in Reunion Island

The 20th edition promises to be memorable…!

One of the most famous trail competitions in the world, the Grand Raid in Reunion Island is celebrating its 20th anniversary with pride. This mountain race called “La diagonal des fous” comprises a path of more than 160 kilometer distance with more than 9000 meter level difference.

Each year, this adventure proposed by the organizers of the Grand Raid meets over 2000 runners including participant from Reunion Island and abroad; among more than thirty nations: France, Madagascar, Africa, Spain, Italy, Mauritius island, the United-State, Australia, England…etc

For this 20th edition, three races are proposed: the 20th edition of “La Diagonale des fous’ which will be held on the 18th to 21st, the 13th edition of the Bourbon Trail with a distance of 93 kilometers with 4000 meters of inclines will take place on the 20th & the 21st  and the newborn which is celebrating its 2nd edition this year ‘the Mascarene’ proposes a path of 61kilometer featuring inclines of more than 3000 meters.

Under a tropical climate, these nature lovers’ athletes’ men and women, will be crossing the island from north to south with a very technical layout but still a fantastic adventure to discover the island of Reunion. The track will reveal various facets of the island offering breathtaking sceneries: lush vegetation, the volcano and its lunar landscape, tropical forest with their multiple colors, the cirques, the peaks, the rampart…

The Grand Raid 2012 will see the participation of the French, ‘World Trail Champion 2011’, Erick Clavery. He also was the guest of honor last July to participate in the Extreme Dodo Trail in Mauritius where he earned the victory in 6h44mm37. The Grand Raid promises to be memorable with the participation of the greatest champions of this discipline namely straight from the Pyrenees the winner of the Grand Raid 2011 Kilian Jornet (see attached picture), the French Joe Grant, the American Anton Krupicka, Michel Lanne (member of Salomon’s team), the Spanish Iker Karrera (also from Salomon’s team)…among others !
